We suggest a formalism for describing closed braids and links by using
horisontal trisecants; this naturally leads to a description of braids and closed
braids by graphs of special type with crossings of valency 6.
This approach naturally extends to a description of links up to link homotopy
by such graphs.
We shall also discuss the phenomenon of picture-valued invariants
when invariants of objects are valued in linear combinations of diagrams of
objects.
