QUANTUM FIELD THEORY

(each item is approximately two academic hours)

1. Introduction. What do condensed matter and subatomic physics have in common?

2. Path (or functional) integrals in Quantum Mechanics, Statistical Mechanics and

Quantum Field Theory. Examples, exercises.

3. Heisenberg's model for ferromagnets and its generalizations. Two-dimensional

quantum field models: O(N), CP(N), HP(N).

4. Asymptotic freedom in quantum field theory.

5. Riemann geometry. Friedan's renormalization in curved space. Behavior of magnetic

materials near phase transition point.

6. Non-perturbative 1/N expansion. Spontaneous mass generation and restoration of

symmetry in two dimensions.

7. Yang – Mills theory in 2,3,4 dimensions. Parametrization of SO(N) and SU(N)

groups, metrics of the group space, integrals over groups.

8. Yang--Mills theory on a lattice. Computer simulations: Methods and results.

10. Classical field configurations. Instantons and solitons.

11. Quantum fluctuations about instantons.

12. Instanton ensemble. Physical applications.

13. Tunneling of Bose--Einstein Condensate (BEC). Macroscopic “self-trapping”. “Swallow-tail catastrophe” in BEC on optical lattices.

14. Instantons in 2d models. Domain walls.

15. Quantum fluctuations about solitons. The Skyrmion. The 5-quark baryon.

16. Quantum determinants: exact, approximate and numerical methods.

17. Quantum anomalies. Interpretation of anomalies.

18. Duality transformation in gauge theory. Yang--Mills theory as Quantum Gravity.

Spontaneous mass generation.

19. Sponges (губки) as an object of Quantum Gravity.

20. Instantons in Quantum Chromodynamics. Instanton “liquid”.

21. Spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in strong interactions, and the origin of mass. Spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking as a random matrix problem.

22. Monopoles in non-Abelian gauge theory. Instantons with non-trivial holonomy and the confinement-deconfinement phase transition.

23. Phase transition to the color superconductor state at high matter density. Analogy with the transition between a high-Tc superconductor and an antiferromagnetic state.

24. Introduction to the physics of graphene.

25. Introduction to topological insulators.
